Adaptive Learning – Future of e-learning industry

Adaptive learning is a revolution in the field of education. This system uses computer algorithms to customize learning resources as per requirement of the learner.
This system of e-learning is very useful not only for students but also for professionals. The genesis of this system is based on the fact that customized learning was not possible on a large-scale basis. Well adaptive learning breaks all the traditional dilemmas and provides a solution which is quite scalable.
This technology of learning has its origin since the AI movement but gained momentum in mid 1970’s. The system hence delivers custom learning capabilities that address the distinctive needs of an individual through just-in-time feedback, pathways, and resources in place of generalized experiences.
Imagine a tutor, like one in this picture helping the student understand a concept. Here, the tutor adapts according to the understanding level of the students and modifies the approach. Now, as the number of students will increase in the class it will be difficult for the tutor to adapt simultaneously for all the students. Here works the breakthrough provided by Adaptive Learning, where the system itself adapts to the requirements of the learner and provides the content customized to his/her needs. It helps scale the benefits of adaptive learning to tens, hundreds, or thousands of students at a time.

This technique uses adaptivity factors like performance (what the student is doing, what they’ve done in the past), level of knowledge (prior or gained), content preferences, misconceptions, demographics, or other data sources to review the learners’ behaviors and performance in order to personalize the course content. The data thus collected can further be used to build more & more customized courses.

With increased use of online learning and e-learning platforms it is becoming more and more important to use such technologies which can actually edify the experience of the learners.
Various researches have supported the idea behind adaptive learning technology giving it a boost.

This technology is in intense use at national levels all round the world and is contributing majorly in scientific research & development. The technology is proving useful in designing curriculums for emerging technologies. Just in its nascent stage this technology has given pace to all online and e-learning platforms.
